How do you properly blend paint colors?

I know that you should never use the bristles because it screws it up, and gets all clumped up in there, but I don't want to use the end of my paintbrush, either, because it gets really messy, and it doesn't even blend it that well. Is there another tool that I could use? (It's only small amounts of paint, like on a palette for an art project, not huge tins.)How do you properly blend paint colors?
There's a tool specifically meant for this, it's called a palette knife. They come in different sizes and shapes depending on the amount of paint you want to mix. You can find cheap plastic ones at your craft store. Generally the metal ones work much nicer though. you're average one is meant to mix only a tablespoon amount of paint or smaller.

Scrape up the paint with the side of the knife and use the bottom to blend and mix it together and wipe off excess on the palette, the knife is very flexible for this job.
